PARA
PROGRAM

SELECTION PROCESS

Phase 1 for the 2025 National Team has now begun with autumn Showcase Camps on the horizon!

  PHASE 1 REGISTRATION

The Para division is an open, premier category which means all ages, all genders.  There are not separate womens and open racing categories in para, all races are open.  This should not discourage older or female athletes from applying as there is a point system in place as an attempt to equalize the playing field.

Para racing consists of PD1 (all para athletes) and PD2 (half para athletes, half non-para athletes) so even if a paddler does not have a para-eligible diagnosis, there are seats available in the para program.

Essentially anyone can apply for consideration for the para program, it is incredibly inclusive!

A para-eligible diagnosis may include sensory, physical, psychological, neurological, intellectual, or developmental impairments.  If you are unsure if your diagnosis would qualify for inclusion for a para seat please contact the Coach Katy Milne.  For those athletes also aiming for their age group National Teams, para can be selected as an alternate option.  The Coach will work with the other Coaches to obtain video and testing results for consideration should you not be selected for your age group.

This will be the second cycle that Dragon Boat Canada has fielded a Para dragon boat team, our first cycle brought 3 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze in the 9 events entered at the IDBF World Championships and we're looking to build on this success and expand the program.

The information below is from the 2023 cycle, this will provide you with a good foundation of knowledge about the program.
